CHAPTER 3 - IRRIGATION SCHEDULING

Abstract: This chapter provides information on irrigation scheduling for crops with micro/high-frequency irrigation systems. The main focus is on how to use the system's capacity, uniformity, and application rates, as well as evapotranspiration (ET) and plant-based measurements to attain good application efficiency and production. Irrigation scheduling inputs include soil water content or tension measurements, near-real-time evaporation device data, near-real-time references, and forecast ETo and crop coefficient (Kc) values. Discussions on devices for soil water and tension measurements and plant responses to irrigation are included. Also, there are segments on a low-cost method to measure crop ET directly and employing plant-based stress data to refine irrigation scheduling further. A sizable part of the chapter provides irrigation scheduling examples, information on controlling salinity, and guidelines on how to optimize crop production based on the authors' extensive experience with grower adoption of suggested methods.
